Training afternoons and/or evenings for those involved in Church Music take place in response to expressed needs of people who are working in this ministry. Anyone involved in Church Music may participate – whether a member of a choir/music group or cantor.
Particular training is offered in the following:
Psalms of Sundays – folk settings as well as settings for parish cantor/choir These sessions are organised for the specific seasons: Advent, Christmastide, Lent, Easter, Eastertide. The aim of these is to promote singing of the prescribed psalms for the liturgy. Those who attend receive texts and music in a variety of formats and settings so that psalms are accessible to music readers and non-readers alike; to classical choirs, folk choirs and soloists etc.
Conducting a choir – learning basic techniques of directing a music group/choir
These sessions are offered to support those who manage and direct small singing groups and choirs. It is very much a ‘hands-on’ or rather ‘hands-active’ workshop where those who participate get a chance to learn various techniques and try to implement them with a singing group. Those who attend are invited to direct the group present as a way of rehearsing the techniques being suggested. A good, fun workshop, this course has proven popular with classroom teachers as well as with those involved in Church Music.
Music for the Liturgy – workshops that focus on music appropriate to specific feasts and celebrations
Occasional one-day workshops are offered to expand the repertoire of music that parish musicians may be using for a variety of feastdays. It is helpful if the leader/director and the members of the music group attend together, as in the space of the day, a group may very quickly learn new pieces. This workshop is usually followed up a few weeks later with a celebration of the Eucharist at which the choir members are invited to sing.
