General Information

Thornhill Centre is a unique facility in the North West region of Ireland.  Situated on the banks of the River Foyle, just 3 miles outside the historic city of Derry, it is a resource distinguished by the majesty of its grounds and the fine accommodation and tasteful décor in the house.

While there is a specific ministry project emanating from the Centre, its facilities are available for conferences and other uses by arrangement.  Individuals, particularly those seeking reflective time and space, may enjoy the warmth, comfort and openness that the Centre affords.

Thornhill Centre is a developing project, rooted in the ministry of the Sisters of Mercy in caring for and supporting spirituality in its diverse expressions.  Sr Perpetua McNulty, Sr Marie Wylie and Miss Charlene Doherty are the Thornhill Centre team, who, together with paid staff (cook, housekeeper, secretary and groundsperson) and volunteer co-workers are committed to the original mission of the project, with an expressed desire to evangelize.  Christ’s command to “go out to the whole world and proclaim the Good News” is central to the project.

Through the dedication and hard work of the Thornhill team, the beauty of Thornhill Centre house and grounds, the accommodation and catering facilities are maintained to a high standard.  The aesthetic quality provides an important context in which much of the ministry of the Thornhill team takes place.

Sr Perpetua McNulty co-ordinates the Thornhill Centre Project, directing the work of the Centre and having a particular responsibility for offsite work to which the Centre is committed.  Perpetua comes from a teaching background and apart from her work at the Centre, she is also involved with St Eugene’s Cathedral, where she is the Director of Music.

Sr Marie Wylie is Assistant Co-ordinator to the Centre.  Marie is very involved in many aspects of the Centre's work and has particular responsibility in overseeing the Prayer Guidance Ministry in the diocese.  Marie also comes from a teaching background.

Charlene Doherty has joined the Thornhill Centre team this year and is involved in various aspects of the Centre's work.  She also helps out at some of the offsite school retreats which the Centre is committed to.  Charlene graduated last year from St Mary's College, Twickenham with a degree in Theology. She has also recently been trained in Prayer Guidance.

Perpetua and Marie have trained in Spiritual Direction as well as Prayer Guidance.
